I had a friend ask me how much I make yesterday. We both work in the same field and have similar experience so we should be making about the same amount of money, but I think I make a bit more. I really consider him an acquaintance rather than a friend though because I haven't known him long. He doesn't work at the same place I work anymore, but he used to - and he's shared with me that he took a pay cut to go to this new job.
I ended up changing the subject.
I know it's kind of a taboo subject - at least it was back in the day. It seems that more people talk about it these days. I've even heard of some small companies openly sharing with their employees how much everyone makes. It would really bring a lot of companies to their knees if everyone knew how much everyone was making.
I'd have no problem telling a close friend how much I make, but not someone I barely know, and certainly not on a website forum - so don't ask! Ha!
Thoughts? Do you share your income with coworkers? Do you think I did the 'right' thing by changing the subject?
