My wife and I are in the process of choosing a name for our baby girl that should arrive just before Christmas. The word process was used intentionally as I'm an engineer and came up with an engineering solution for naming our children. We used it for our first son, Simon Paul, and have finished two rounds in the process for our future daughter.
The process is that we each put together a list of every name that we think we might consider for either a first or middle name. We then combine the lists and eliminate any names from our lists that the other simply won't consider. With Simon we had quite a bit of overlap and we ended up with a list of names that was somewhere in the mid 30's with quite a few overlaps. This time we ended up with 43 names and we only had two overlaps. At this point I put the names into a spreadsheet to generate all possible first and middle name combinations. Round 1 required us reading through over 1,700 names, many of which were horrible. We do it in groups and ended up with about 130 for the second round. After the first round we have chosen different ways to narrow the list. This time we compared the names with the same first name and chose our favorite ones. We've found it really interesting to see how our opinion of names changes after reading a name several hundred times. Some names grow on you and others do the opposite. A perfect example was the name Simon, it was never anything that had ever crossed my mind to name a child but it grew on me in time. My wife just saw it listed in a baby name book and like it. Paul was my grandpa's name so it was always high on the list to be included.
After the 2nd round this afternoon we are down to 45 names, but I added a new one to the mix so we have to mix it up with the 43 other names and will plan to choose the best five combinations to add into the official round 3.
Are there any names that we should be including? By the way, we keep our names TOP SECRET so that nobody even knows names that we're considering until the baby is born. This includes even posting them online!
What are our favorite three girl names. The most recently added name was the name of a grocery store checker. I read the name tag and was surprised that it wasn't already on the list.
